Outdoor facilities BMW Classic

Design of the outdoor facilities of the new BMW Group Classic location in the Munich district Milbertshofen

In the Milbertshofen district of Munich, BMW AG has reacquired a property from Knorr Bremse that will become the premier address for lovers of historic automobiles and motorcycles: BMW Classic. The ensemble of buildings comprises the eastern section of the first BMW plant, built in 1918, and so part of the former production halls for aircraft engines is returning to the company's ownership.

Today's use is no longer the industrial production of vehicles or vehicle parts, but still a workshop and station for BWM classics still on wheels. The ensemble is also available for cultural events, a café is open to visitors and passers-by alike.

The open spaces around the renovated factory hall, the gate buildings and the new modern workshop building in between were redesigned throughout. The history of the site and the multifunctional use result in the demand for a simple, functional and unaffected design, paired with carefully developed functional details, with well-considered combinations of forms and materials, and with light art. Today, chestnut trees once again frame the former factory building.

Key points of the project:

  • Species-rich sward of the northern Munich plain, loosely overlaid with Scots pine and other tree species
  • The south-facing front gardens, which were intensively used by factory employees at the time, have been partly preserved and reinterpreted by additions, so that today one can once again enjoy lush ornamental shrubs, vines and fruit trees
  • Ramps, stairs and large format panels at the entrance areas and the café terrace
  • Parking area with lawn joints, driving areas with edgings made of steel strips
  • Enclosure for technical equipment with facades made of expanded metal
